SuperPower hits Times Square
)
Our moms said video games would never save the world.
A few weeks ago we found out we were getting the Nasdaq screen on Times Square.
If you have never thought about it, here is the thing about that screen. It is seven storeys tall, it sits in the most photographed intersection on the planet, and half a million people walk past it every day.
So we got the team together to decide what we decided to say.
We knew what we did not want. We did not want a stock photo of a wind turbine at golden hour. We did not want the word "sustainability" anywhere near it. We definitely did not want a sentence with "leveraging distributed energy assets" in it, which, believe it or not, someone in the team can always be relied upon to suggest.
Then somebody made a joke, and the joke turned out to be the answer.
Because at some point in that conversation we worked out that every single person in the room had been told the same thing growing up. Different countries, different decades, different devices, but the same sentence. Turn it off. Do something useful. There's no career in this. Video games are never going to save the world.
Some of us heard it from a mom. Some of us heard it from a dad, a teacher, a careers advisor with a clipboard and a bad tie. All of us heard it.
And here we are. Sitting in a company where people play games, and playing those games puts clean power on the grid. Where your PS5 and your heat pump and your EV charger are quietly on the same team. Where a night of 2K is doing something for the grid that a solar panel on its own cannot do, because the grid does not just need more power, it needs people who move when it matters.
Nobody could have explained that to our parents in 1998. Honestly, nobody could have explained it to us in 1998.
So we wrote it on the building.
YOUR MOM SAID VIDEO GAMES WOULD NEVER SAVE THE WORLD. WELL, HERE WE ARE.
We are not claiming we have saved anything yet. We have a 10MW stake in a Texas solar plant, a growing pile of connected homes, and a lot of work ahead of us. The world is still very much unsaved. But the direction of travel is good, and it is being driven by exactly the people everybody assumed were wasting their time.
The part we are proudest of is that the message is not really about us. It is about our members. Every home connected to Superpower is someone who decided that their gaming habit could pull double duty. They are the ones making it true. We just rented the screen.
To our team, who built the thing that made the joke land: thank you. To our members, who are the reason it is not just a joke: thank you more.
And to everyone who was told to go do something meaningful with their life instead.
Send this one to your mom.

We're about to launch the first ever power plant backed by gamers. Real players, paid real money for in-game content, and we used that to build power. Hell yeah!
